Animal burial: What is allowed?

Animal burial: What is allowed in Germany?

If you are faced with the difficult task of planning a proper pet burial for your beloved four-legged friend, there are several permitted ways to say goodbye in Germany. Here is what you should know to ensure a dignified pet burial:
Animal burial: What is allowed? Four ways to say goodbye to your beloved pet.

1st animal crematorium

An animal burial by cremation offers you the opportunity to give your pet an individual cremation. You can choose between an individual cremation and a collective cremation. With an individual cremation, you receive your animal's ashes in an urn that you can keep at home, bury (note: only compostable urns!) or scatter. Collective cremation is a more cost-effective option in which the ashes of several animals are scattered together. Cremation is becoming increasingly popular among us pet owners and gives us the opportunity to say goodbye to our beloved four-legged friends with dignity.

2nd animal cemetery

Another option for animal burial is burial in a pet cemetery. There are around 120 such cemeteries throughout Germany that offer a place of remembrance and mourning. Here you can give your pet a final resting place and honor it with a gravestone or other mementos.

3. Animal burial in your own garden

Maybe you want a very personal animal burial in your own garden. This form of burial is permitted under certain conditions, such as that the animal did not die of a notifiable disease. Another important point is that the grave is deep enough and a certain distance from public paths. You should also make sure that you can only bury a cremated animal in a biodegradable and compostable urn. This method of animal burial allows you to be close to your animal and have a private place of mourning.

4. Innovative forms of burial

Pet burial has evolved and today there are innovative options such as diamond burial, where your pet's ashes are transformed into a diamond, or tree burial, where the ashes serve as nutrients for a newly planted tree. These special forms of pet burial offer a unique way to preserve the memory of your pet.

What you should avoid

It is important to know that animal burial in forests or on public green spaces is not permitted in Germany. Such actions are illegal and can result in fines. Disposing of animal remains in the organic waste bin is also prohibited and disrespectful to the deceased animal.
Also make sure that you choose a sustainable method to say goodbye to your pet. Only biodegradable materials may be used for burial.

When planning a pet burial, your wishes and your relationship with your pet are crucial.
